Buddhist practice and meditation are possibly not what come to mind in connection with Scotland and the Scottish Highlands, and while Inverness definitely does have more churches than Buddhist temples along the banks of the Ness, it is home to one of the Triratna Buddhist Community groups who meet to meditate and engage in Buddhist enquiry. It is also home to at least two Tibetan Buddhist groups and one Zen meditation group.
In Morayshire, along the southern coast of the Moray Firth, there is a Triratna group who meet weekly to meditate, followers of Thich Nhat Hanh's mindfulness meditation practice, a Soka Gakkai group who use Buddhist chanting as a way of bringing about positive mental states and Engaged Buddhists who are seeking ways to apply the insights from meditation practice and dharma teachings to situations of social, political, and economic suffering and injustice.
